The EPA finally changes their fuel economy standards

Finally, the EPA has realized that people not only have, but remarkably seem to actually use, air conditioning on the interstate and it seems they don’t do 45 mph on highways either. At least they are now trying to come up with numbers that are more realistic afer all these years of inaccuracy.

The formula changes will result in 2008 cars showing as much as 12% lower fuel economy numbers in the city and 8% less on the highway. Since the new test also includes operations at 20 degrees where hybrid engines do not do as well in the cold, their estimates may drop as much as 20%.

More details from the Seattle Times and the New York Times. And so ends the greatest fiction story of the last century, the EPA ratings.
