Today is the fiftieth anniversary of the airing of the first Rocky & Friends Show. Rocky the flying squirrel and Bullwinkle the moose were formative in their day, precursors of the Simpsons, South Park, and other cartoons. It initially also had a puppet sequence and in one show Bullwinkle the puppet encouraged kids to pull the tuning knobs of the TV set to ensure “we’ll be sure to be with you next week!” According to the studios, thirty thousand parents called to complain that their sets now had no tuning knobs. Here’s the opening from the show.
